Stress Awareness Month- Tips for Dealing with Stress
Good Morning! I hope you are having a fantastic holiday weekend so far.
I was lucky enough to get off work early yesterday, so I had a little extra time to wind down and kick off my weekend.
I know you frequently hear me talk about my job and life in general being full of stress. I have been really trying to calm down and take care of myself more and focus on not letting stress get the best of me. That can be hard, I know, but it is really important so you don’t wind up burnt out and exhausted!
Everyone experiences stress differently, I myself wind up with anxiety, headaches and fatigue. A few examples of other symptoms related to stress are: difficulty sleeping, weight gain or weight loss, teeth grinding, panic attacks, heartburn, sweaty hands or feet and nausea.
Today, I am going to share with you my top 3 tips of dealing with stress.
- Exercise- Running has always been a form of therapy for me. I love the peace I find while running alone and the ability to vent when I run with my sister. However, I did feel like a piece of exercise was missing from my routine. When I signed up for the gym, the biggest perk was that they offered yoga classes. Specifically, yoga classes that fit into my work schedule and lasted for about an hour. I cannot even tell you how amazing yoga has been for not only my physical health, but also my mental health! It has made me feel more cool and collected as well as physically more relaxed and ready to take on the day. Lately, I have been making my way to different areas of the gym and adding in some weight training. The idea of lifting weights and venturing over to the “other-side” of the gym used to terrify me. Now I am working out in the weight area twice a week. The best thing about exercise is that you don’t have to do a long routine to enjoy the benefits! Small activities scattered through out your day can get those endorphins going!
A Few Ideas for how to get moving:
- Use the stairs rather than the elevator at work or out and about
- Take your dog for a walk
- Exercise based video game at home
2. Create A Peace Place- This may sound strange but I love knowing I have a place to go that promotes peace both physically and mentally. While my “peace place” might be different everyday, there is usually common elements to be found. The first one being candles! I love the fact that certain smells can call me almost instantly. One of my new favorite companies is Treazured Scentz. The variety of scents offered is amazing and there is a large variety of smells that prompt stress relief. For me, lavender always does the trick, especially near bed time. I would highly recommend you check them at – http://www.treazuredscentz.com/

3. Manage Workplace Stress- This one is a big one for me. I often times have a hard time keeping my anxiety in check when I am at work. That is tough to admit, but true. Some days are worse than others but it has definitely helped to have a set of tools to deal with stress that comes my way and threatens to push me over that edge. One of the best ways I have found to manage workplace stress is by time blocking. By organizing parts of my day, I am able to feel more like I am in control instead of running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Another way I deal with stress is by confiding in a co-worker that I am very close with that I am struggling. I know that last suggestion sounds terrifying. It is always a tough conversation to have, especially when you are allowing yourself to be vulnerable and real. That might not work for everyone. For me, it helps to know someones got my back.
